Läpinäkyvyydestä / Exercises in Transparency
Exercises in Transparency is a live art and artistic
research project that examines the ideal of openness and transparency in
modern society.
At the heart of the work is a contradictory, perhaps also childlike need: to be seen but to remain hidden.
According to the philosopher Byung-Chul Han, we live
in a society of transparency where constant interaction has become an
unquestioned ideal.
Han connects transparency with, for example,
interpersonal relationships, symbolically equates it with pornography,
and raises questions of power, control, and lack of trust:
“(A) transparent relationship is a dead one, altogether lacking attraction and vitality.”
Navigating between everyday life and art, Exercises in Transparency does not offer predigested statements, but invites the audience to reflect on the topic together with the artists. The work consists of a series of performances to be seen in the fall of 2022, each approaching the topic from a different perspective, with different means of live art.
The project is led by artist, performer and journalist Katriina
Kettunen.
The core working group also includes scenographer, performer Kristian Palmu and sound designer, performer Oula Rytkönen.

EVENTS:
Sat 8.10. klo 17-20 / Discourse & space: Opening
At the opening event the audience gets a first glance to the piece. The artists are introducing themselves and the piece, and the space that has build into an installation. The program starts at 6 PM but the guests can come and go as they please. Refreshments will be served, free of charge.
Body and subconsciousness
Wed 12.10.-15.10.
This week the piece concentrates on the human body, different senses and the question of whether a human body can be transparent. The audience has three different possibilities to attend to the performance. Due to limited audience capacity you need to buy a 5€ ticket from lippu.fi.
Darkness
20.10. – 22.10. / Gallery open 13-19
On the Darkness week the working group explores the alternative for transparency, and invites the audience to be a part of the exploration. Could abstaining (opting out) from constant interaction feed trust, imagination and creativity? Could darkness and silence be a part of (artistic) work?
During the course of Darkness the space assembles into an performative installation, which is open for the audience from Thursday to Saturday 1PM-7PM. Please pay attention to the door person’s guidelines when entering the space. There is an optional entrance fee to the space (only cash).
Exercises in Transparency: performance
